NEOLAX
laxative
  • Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide used in the treatment of constipation and reduce blood ammonia level in portal systemic in hepatic encephalopathy.
  • Lactulose is absorbed only to a limited extent after oral administration. Thus, it reaches the colon unchanged. There, it is broken down by the colonic bacterial flora to organic acids .This exerts a local osmotic effect in the  colon resulting in increased faecal bulk and stimulation  of the movement of the colon and normalizes the consistency of the stool. The constipation is cleared and the physiological rhythm of the colon is reinstated. It may take up to 48 hours before an effect is obtained.
  • When larger doses are given, the pH in the colon is reduced sufficiently to cause a decrease in absorption of ammonium ions and other toxic nitrogenous compounds, so that the blood ammonia concentration falls in patients  with hepatic encephalopathy.
  • NEOLAX® solution does not influence the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Each 100 ml of NEOLAX® solution contains :

  • lactulose     67 gm

NEOLAX® solution is indicated for the treatment of :

  • Constipation: regulation of the physiological rhythm of the colon.
  • Hepatic encephalopathy: treatment and prevention of hepatic coma or precoma.
  • Where a soft stool is considered of medical benefit (hemorrhoids, after colon/anus surgery).
  • Galactosaemia.
  • Bowel obstruction.
  • Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the  product.
  • Due to the lowering of the pH in the colon, drugs that  have a colon pH dependent release such as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) agents may be inactivated.
  • This medicine may be used as prescribed during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
  • Abdominal discomfort associated with flatulence or cramps may occur during the first few days of treatment,  as a rule it disappears after a couple of days.
  • Excessive dosage may result in diarrhea with loss of water and electrolytes.
  • Nausea and vomiting have occasionally been reported after high doses.

Overdose:-

  • If dose too high, belly ache and diarrhea can occur. In such instance, cessation of treatment will normally be  sufficient, and physician or pharmacist should be consulted to adjust the dose.

In constipation or where a soft stool is considered of medical benefit:

  • Adults: Initially one tablespoonful (15 ml) 2 -3 times  daily, gradually reduced according to patient’s needs.
  • Children (6 -12 year): 10 ml twice daily.
  • Children (1- 5 year): one teaspoonful (5 ml) twice daily.
  • Infants: 2.5 ml twice daily.

(The dosage may be gradually reduced according to patient’s needs)

Precoma and coma hepaticum:

  • (30 -45ml) three times daily, subsequently adjusted to  produce maximally 2- 3 times per day soft stool.
  • The pH of the stool should be preferably 5- 5.5.

  • As the solution contains also small quantities of galactose and lactose, it should be used with caution in diabetics and patients on galactose-free diet (galactosaemia) .
  • The dosage used in the treatment of hepatic coma is usually much higher and may need to be taken into consideration.
  •  Bottle of 100 ml oral solution .
  • Store at temperature not exceeding 25°C(preferably between 10°C and 25°C) . Protect from direct sunlight.
