Benzol® suspension
For Treatment of Common Worms
  • Benzol® (Albendazole) is an orally administered broad- spectrum anthelmintic which is highly effective against a wide range of intestinal helminths and also tissue helminth infections.
  • Its activity is considered to be dependent on the inhibition or destruction of cytoplasmic microtubules in the worm’s intestinal or absorptive cells, thus inhibition of glucose uptake and depletion of glycogen stores and cholinesterase secretion are impaired. This causes a cascade of metabolic disruption, including energy depletion, which immobilizes and then kills the susceptible helminth.
  • The antihelminthic action of albendazole is thought to be mainly intra-intestinal due to low absorption (less than 5%) after oral administration. However, at higher albendazole doses, sufficient amount is absorbed and metabolised to the active sulphoxide metabolite, to have a therapeutic effect against tissue parasites. Albendazole is poorly absorbed, and it is believed to be due to low aqueous solubility. Absorption is significantly enhanced (up to 5 fold) if albendazole is administered with a fatty meal compared with fasted state.
  • Albendazole sulphoxide is widely distributed throughout the body including into the bile, cerebrospinal fluid, liver & urine.
  • It’s approximately 70% bound to plasma protein. Albendazole sulphoxide is eliminated in  the bile; only  a small amount appears to be excreted in the urine not more than1% of the dose.

Each Film coated tablet of Benzol® 400 contains:

  • Albendazole       400 mg

Each Film coated tablet of Benzol® 200 contains:

  • Albendazole        200 mg

Each 5 ml of Benzol® suspension contains:

  • Albendazole        100 mg

Treatment single or mixed helminthes infections by:

Treatment of cestode infection:

  • Cysticercosis and Echinococcus (hydiated disease) in relative high dose.
  • Tissue nematode infection, cutoneous larva migraines.

Important Notes:

  • Administer anticonvulsant and steroid therapy during first week of treatment of neurocysticercosis.
  • In women of childbearing age (15–40 years), Benzol®should be administered within 7 days of the start of normal menstruation.

Benzol® is contraindicated in the following cases

  • Hypersensitivity to Albendazole.
  • Infants under 2 years of age.
  • Albendazole active metabolite serum levels are increased when taken with dexamethasone or praziquantel.
  • Albendazole active metabolite concentration is increased in bile and hydated cyst fluid when given with cimetidine.
  • Benzol® should not be given for pregnant women or who are thought to be pregnant and patients should not become pregnant for at least one month following cessation of Benzol® therapy.
  • Exclude pregnancy before starting treatment (Non-hormonal contraception during and for 1month after treatment).
  • If patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, Benzol®should be discontinued immediately. If pregnancy occurs while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential hazard to the fetus.
  • Benzol® should not be given for lactating mothers.
