Azmavent®
Bronchodilator
  • The active component of  Azmavent® is Salbutamol which is one of a group called bronchodilators.
  • Salbutamol is beta agonists which relaxes the muscles in the walls of the small air passages in the lungs. This helps to open up the airways and so helps to relieve chest tightness, wheezing and cough so that you can breathe more easily.

Each 5 ml of Azmavent® oral solution contain:

  • Salbutamol (as sulphate)    2 mg

Azmavent® is indicated:

  • for the prevention and relief of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma of all types
  • for the alleviation of any reversible airways obstruction associated with conditions such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema.
  • Hypersensitivity to salbutamol.
  • Beta adrenergic blocking drugs(ex:propranolol) inhibit the bronchodilator action of salbutamol; However such drugs should not be used with salbutamol.
  • Salbutamol is known to cross the placental barrier in humans and excreted in breast milk.
  • Safety for use in pregnancy has not been demonstrated therefore the drug should not be used in pregnant and nursing women unless the expected benefit outweighs any potential risk.

¤ Most people do not have any problems when taking this medicine. A few people may find that it causes side effects such as :

  • Fine tremor of skeletal muscle (particularly the hands),palpitations, tachycardia, nervous tension, headaches, and peripheral vasodilatation.
  • Potentially serious hypokalaemia has been reported after large doses.

Overdose:

  • The signs of salbutamol overdosage are significant tachycardia and/or significant muscle tremor.

 Adults:

  • 5 - 10 mL three or four times a day.
  • The optimum single dose for many patients is 10 mL but, especially with elderly patients or with patients who are unusually sensitive to beta-adrenergic stimulant drugs, it is advisable to initiate treatment with 5 mL three or four times a day.
  • If adequate bronchodilatation is not obtained the dose may be gradually increased to as much  as 20 mL, usually without significant cardiovascular side effects .

 Children :

  • Under 2 years: 100µg/kg four times daily
  • 2 - 6 years: 2.5 - 5ml three to four times daily.
  • 6 - 12 years: 5ml three to four times daily.
  • Over 12 years: 5 - 10ml three to four times daily.
  • Salbutamol is not appropriate for use alone in the treatment of more than mild asthma (severe asthma).
  • Salbutamol and other beta agonists should be given with caution in hyperthyroidism, myocardial insufficiency, arrhythmias, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus.
